While very tame by today’s standards, Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards, released in 1987, was the “naughty” game by Sierra (or one of the two considering Softporn Adventure feat. Roberta Williams in a Jaccuzzi released in 1981). As such, Larry was the talk of the schoolyard when it came out. I eventually had the priviledge of acquiring my own copy perhaps a year or two after release.
Sierra games were best enjoyed playing with a sibling or a friend. The fun wasn’t in securing control of a controller as it were with consoles, but thinking up the next goofy command to try out to see if the developer had the same idea and either did something fun and unexpected (you’d think flushing a toilet after use would be a good idea) or if it was part of the road to successfully completing the game. That left room for two or more players on the hotseat to enjoy the game and take part in both the laughs and the frustration, regardless of who was tasked with actually doing the typing.
The Land of the Lounge Lizards, Lost Wages, looks like a mini Vegas with just one sleezy bar, convenience store, dance club, Casino hotel and a wedding chapel. That’s enough to get lost in for a while and still takes a couple hours to complete if you know the way.
